The Tam o’ Shanter, or tammie, is named for the eponymous hero of Robert Burns' 1790 poem. You don’t see many of these outside Scotland, but they are the most magnificent hats for a) appalling weather or b) striking a strong, elegant and original pose at a wedding or whatever. Originally worn by men, recently they have also been chosen by women and last year featured in fashion shows by Dior.

Fit

To measure for a tam:
Take a soft tape measure and measure the circumference of your head above you ears and round your forehead, tight enough that a hat won’t fly off, but not so tight as to give you a headache. This is your measurement.
