A short discussion with Ruby Creagh.
Charlie. How did you first discover British Pasture Leather?
Ruby. I discovered them through a regenerative farmers group online. I followed their work closely over the next few years and reached out to them once their leather became available.
What did you like about their work?
Sustainability has always been a driving force behind my work. Being able to work with a company that not only produces a highly aesthetic and practical product but is also traceable, ethically produced and has British provenance drew me to them instantly.
Is the leather different to work with or does it just feel better because of its provenance?
The leather is extremely high quality. I find it hard to find leather that can be used for both bags and belts while still being durable, BLP leather does this. Knowing that the provenance of the leather is also British, end-to-end gives me the peace of mind to continue to create durable pieces that will last generations while continuing such an important legacy.
Do you work exclusively with their leather?
Yes, I do. I work exclusively with British Pasture Leather. This enables me to build strong relationships with regenerative farmers and establish a British supply chain.
What would you most like to make with this leather if you had time?
I am a very keen horse rider and have spent many years repairing bridles and saddles with scrap bits of leather. I would love the opportunity to make a saddle!
How did you come to leather working? You have a lot of different interests and skills.
I have always been interested in how things work and are put together. When I was younger, I would make clothes, bags, anything I could think of out of fabric my mum collected. I was also a keen horse rider and constantly repairing my tack. This started my love for leather as a durable material that connected me so closely to my passion for horses. I found an apprenticeship with a lecturer from St Martins in London who taught me how to pattern cut and make bags and shoes by hand. I then started my own brand and here I am today!
